There are forty roads that make up the official toponymy of Lisbon and the Estrada do Desvio takes its name because it really is a detour through Lumiar to avoid traffic on Calçada de Carriche and allow it to decongest.
Roughly speaking, this road runs parallel to Calçada de Carriche, which was once the connection road, where bulls and campinos used to go for bullfights in what was then Campo de Santana (today, Campo Mártires da Pátria).
The Estrada do Desvio appears referenced in 1907 in the topographic plan of Júlio Silva Pinto and Alberto de Sá Correia, where the toponyms Posto de Carriche, Estrada Militar, Quinta de Nova Sintra, Calçada de Carriche, Estrada do Desvio, Calçada do Poço and Plum tree.
Few other references can be found in the municipal archives, apart from the paving of the road in 1937, photos by Eduardo Portugal from 1939 showing a road flanked on both sides by fields and agricultural areas, as well as an undated image of Artur Goulart but with the significant caption "Road of the Lumiar Detour to decongest traffic on Calçada de Carriche".
In 1956, by public notice dated 28 December, the section of Estrada do Desvio between Rua do Lumiar and the road leading to Ameixoeira, was renamed Rua Alexandre Ferreira, thus honoring the founder of Inválidos do Comércio, an institution whose headquarter is located in this street.
